Singapore Short Film Competition: Non-finalists

Silver Screen Awards

Dates: 16 April and 18 April 2010
Venue: Singapore Art Museum, The Auditorium

As part of the festival's annual free programme, over 35 non-finalists of the Singapore Short Film Competition will be screened at the Singapore Art Museum in four sessions over two days. Registration not required.

An Unconventional Story by Daniel Yam Kum Tim (11 min)
Nicole believes in destiny when it comes to love. But she keeps missing the guy she is destined to meet. One day she found a journal that belongs to the guy and she sets out to meet him.

Borak by Nathaniel Chew Yok Aun (9 min)
Izam is a secondary school teenager who tries hard to find a place in his circle of friends. He brags about playing soccer for the national team, but constantly makes excuses whenever his friends call him out for a game. His true identity is found out one day and Izam is forced to reveal himself.

Frank & Fridge by Simon Ong Rongbiao (4 min)
'Frank & Fridge' is a short comedy animation about a jobless alcoholic who is having problems with his fridge.

Ice Cream Man by Kelvin Ke (11 min)
Ice Cream Man is an ode to the working class generation of older Singaporeans who played a part in our growing up years. The humble ice cream man is one such person and this story is about him and his granddaughter plying the trade on the streets of Singapore.

Kimberly by Bezner Lim (7 min)
Kimberly is a story that talks about first impressions and deals with the idiom: "Never judge a book by its cover." It is a reflection on how difficult it can be to trust another person in today's society.

My 'Sweetest' Goodbye by Norsahida Adam (8 min)
One day a tragedy took place leaving Sara devastated. She then creates a master plan consisting of five different methods to eliminate her boyfriend, Alex from her mind.

Neighbourhood Ghost by Felice Tang (9 min)
A cynical and much ignored blind man mistakenly thinks he is dead and has become a ghost and goes around announcing everything on his mind. This faulty assumption and the moral consciousness of a ten-year old eventually find him making a friend, and he learns just what it feels like to be alive and to be loved.

Store Bought Love by Soh Chin Hwee (22 min)
Ah Mann, an introverted supermarket worker has fallen in love with a female regular patron, Jamie. He has one last night to profess his love for her just before the supermarket closes down. He has a song that he can never seem to complete. The closely knit supermarket staffs come together in one accord to help him complete his song. However it is Jamie who holds the key to the song finale.

Toy Man by Chun-Yi Hsieh (5 min)
A father cannot forget the old days when he and his daughter had good times together and wants to rewind his life to those times again.

A Garden of Hope by Wendy Tan Siong Hoon (3 min)
This is a short film depicting a girl's hope of walking again despite being bounded in a wheelchair for life. She allows herself to be lost in a garden. Each plant and buds that sprout and bloom in the garden is a representation of a 'hope' that she has for each day.

Dance of Water by Teo Chia Kai (3 min)
This film is a visual translation of an excerpt from Danse Espagnole by M. De Falla (transc. by F. Kreisler), using the varied aesthetics of water to create a whimsical dance.

Don't We All by Janice Lee (8 min)
This story is set like in any other original day of a workaholic business man who because of his work has inevitably neglected his loved ones. However, one day this man's life is changed by some words from a beggar.

I Am Brinsley Bivouac: The A-Z Video by Sia Joo Hiang and Toh Hun Ping (23 min)
Brinsley Bivouac is the protagonist in 'All Broken Up and Dancing', a novel by local writer Kelvin Tan. This video documents the A-Z of Brinsley's rite of passage through his childhood and youth; his throes of existential survival; his search for fraternity in friends.

The Sanctuary by Chee Kang Xiong (6 min)
'The Sanctuary' is a mockumentary about a boy who finds comfort in a school toilet cubicle. By making a 'home' in the toilet cubicle, he finds everyone seem to be going against him when he just want to be alone.

Love Song, The Musical by Calvin Choo (18 min)
Zai, a bashful and shy teenage boy has a secret; a love song which is written especially for the girl of his dreams, Vicky. His best friend, Kai tries to help him makes his feelings known by exposing the secret to the fearsome Mr Vincent and the whole class.

Six Coloured Rainbow by Kenny Png Ming Huat (3 min)
A woman receives an unexpected visit from someone unfazed by the unfamiliarity of her home. But is her visitor really a stranger or someone much closer to her heart?

Urge by Tan Boon Kai (5 min)
7-year old Jia Liang is a possible class representative to be chosen for the school's highly regarded poem recital competition. He has a little secret of his own, and when the class finds out about it, he deals with it badly.

When I Was Just a Little Boy by Derrick Chew (8 min)
'When I Was Just A Little Boy' pays tribute to a 24 year old apartment currently going through its last days before facing the harsh reality of "en-bloc". The film illustrates the filmmaker's reminiscence and affection to a place he called home for one-third of his life.

Akiko by Tan Siang Yu (14 min)
Lee takes a trip to Japan in the hope of meeting his online friend, Akiko. The film explores isolation in a cosmopolitan city and deals ultimately with the human need for connection.

Ananthi by Don Aravind Rajah (7 min)
Unable to bring her terminally ill grandfather home, a young girl celebrates his birthday in her own special way.

Father by Jonathan Chong (7 min)
An underachieving father and husband fails to see the true importance in family. After ruining his son's birthday, he realizes that it is a result of his own incompetence and materialistic ways, and embarks on a journey to reconcile his ways.

Irreversible by Hariz Lee (24 min)
An alternative energy researcher makes accidental discovery of age reversal. In her absence, her machine is misused by her age-conscious husband. Deluded with newfound youthfulness, he chases after a young woman who finally rejects him. Overridden with guilt, the husband tries to reverse the machine's effects.

Mother by Soon Zhan Hui (13 min)
Qing, a working adult has a cold relationship with his mother until one day, he meets a little girl who displays the true meaning of love in the way she misses her deceased mother.

Santan (Coconut Milk) by Farhan Zulkifli (8 min)
This is the story of Adam, a plump but clever preteen boy and his friends; Jerone and Jarina. Both able-bodied siblings but are two totally different individuals. Adam comes from a lower-income family but the siblings are better off.

Star by Russell Adam Morton (19 min)
Keith is comfortable in his blue-collared job, but is he truly happy? During a chance encounter with a girl named Star, Keith learns what it means to be truly happy.

My Favourite Crane by Ting Song (4 min)
Nancy, a twelve year old girl has a crush on Daniel and prepares him a jar of hand-made paper cranes. She is overwhelms by shyness when she meets him in a quiet alley way. Nancy makes the life changing decision but there is something she will never know.

The Reunion by Adrian Lim (12 min)
Lester is a FBI informant working as an accountant with the mob. When he decides to go into witness protection, he learns that the mob knows he has a daughter. Lester needs to convince his daughter to leave with him, problem is - she has not seen him for 20 years.

Wedlock by Haidar Afandi (3 min)
An exposition to an interracial relationship, where fairytale endings are often not 'happily ever after'.

Yours Truly by Kevin Chan (12 min)
Rachel, a florist meets and falls in love with Chris, a photographer. All seems well until Rachel develops an eye disease that requires a corner transplant. Upon receiving her new corneas, Rachel realizes she has lost more than she gained.

This film is a cheesy and quirky take on a boy's infatuation with a girl, an odd mix of people in a unique place and time, and a tradition that marks the coming of age in the Maori culture.

My Sister's Secret by Lim Jia Yun (16 min)

The Biscuit by Adrian Lim and Rachel Toh (7 min)
Teenagers Mark and Cindy plan to be married only to find that their differences are big obstacles that could derail their lives. Mark leaves Cindy after an argument, not knowing a seed of the future lies with Cindy's fate.

The Listener by Han Hao (11 min)
This film is told in two parallel storylines. One of them adopts a childlike fantasy quality while the other depicts the harsh reality of a stale relationship. Eventually a resolution comes about from an unlikely source, a rabbit.

You and I Dream by Jerold Chong Yuan Pei (4 min)
This animation transport viewers along a fantasy journey through the individual perspectives of a boy and a girl, both of whom meet aboard a train and embark upon a mutual dream full of imagination and affection.

Zomberlin by Shaun Koh, Wesley Leon, Jeremy Sing, Liao Jie Kai (8 min)
A man gets attacked by cling wrap in Germany.
